Model for fall detection

There are always a lot of exciting things happening at Vinnter, and sometimes it's fun to look back on projects that left an impression. One example is when Erik, together with our then LIA students Cyrille and Elias, built a model for fall detection using an accelerometer.

There are always a lot of exciting things happening at Vinnter, and sometimes it's fun to look back on projects that left an impression. One example is when Erik, together with our then LIA students Cyrille and Elias, built a model for fall detection using an accelerometer.

The aim was to create a solution that could be used in elderly care to alert people in the event of a fall at home - but also in risky professions, such as security guards. To collect data, the team needed to fall over 2000 times, which was both challenging and quite entertaining.

The big challenge was to build a model that was not only accurate, but also small enough to run in a smartwatch.

  • I did my LIA myself at Vinnter before I was hired here, so it felt extra fun to supervise and see the students develop. We had many interesting and rewarding discussions during the project, says Erik.

We are delighted with the commitment that Cyrille and Elias contributed during their time with us. Seeing their drive, creativity and development up close was truly rewarding - and we take both lessons and laughter with us from the project.
